The project involved removing the neon framework and installing a new LED lighting system. LEDs offer several advantages: lower energy consumption, better durability, reduced maintenance, and improved safety.
Architecturally, the upgrade helped preserve the visual integrity and prominence of the clock dials, ensuring that in both daylight and after dark, the hands and numerals remain clearly visible—while reducing the risk of failure or discolouration that neon tubes tend to suffer over time. The Cumbria Clock Company, specialists in turret clocks and public/historic timepieces, applied their expertise to make sure the installation was sympathetic to the heritage of the Town Hall.
Overall, the 2023 project was a mixture of conservation and technological upgrade: maintaining the iconic look and presence of Luton Town Hall’s clock, while moving to a more efficient, sustainable lighting solution.
