The Cumbria Clock Company takes pride in being able to carry out a wide range of projects to the highest standards, from church clocks to the smallest domestic clocks. Equipped with a dedicated workshop, our domestic clock team can clean, conserve, or restore items ranging from fine Georgian bracket clocks to miniature carriage clocks.
The central element of our service is cleaning to remove years of accumulated dirt and deteriorated lubricants that accelerate the wear and tear of mechanical components. When left to run past their service intervals, the oils inside clock movements tend to attract contaminants and effectively become a sticky grinding paste, which can have a knock-on effect on other areas of the mechanism and thereby cause the clock to stop entirely. While all mechanisms are prone to wear, this can be minimised by the regular cleaning and lubrication of components.
This is followed by a meticulous inspection of critical components such as mainsprings and ratchet mechanisms, where material failure can be anticipated to prevent future disasters. The restoration of worn areas such as pivot holes enables the smooth transmission of power through the wheels and pinions, thereby preventing undue wear on the gear teeth. In extreme cases, worn or damaged wheels can be repaired using traditional hand techniques or re-made using historically appropriate materials. Our workmanship always undergoes a test period to guarantee the correct and smooth running of the clock.
Our range of clients extend from private collectors to museums and historic houses; we are able to tailor our services to match the item and the client’s needs. Other services offer include the drafting of condition and treatment reports, consultations, collections, and deliveries.
