Under our care

Our annual maintenance consists of attending onsite, inspecting the clock installation and checking that it is safe, and that there are no apparent signs of wear or areas of concern that may cause problems in the following twelve months.

The process

1. Cleaning & Lubrication

We clean and lubricate the clock movement and all accessible parts within the building, including the dial motion works, bevel gearing, and universal joints. Bell hammers and bell cranks are also checked, cleaned, and lubricated as necessary.

2. Adjustments & Minor Repairs

Any adjustments needed to hammer wires or hammer check springs are carried out during the visit. Where new steel weight lines or hammer wires have been fitted by us, they will be replaced free of charge if they break while the clock is under our care.

3. Reporting & Recommendations

If we identify any areas of concern, we provide a clear report and quotations for the necessary work. This service is free of charge and without obligation.

4. Exclusions

The annual maintenance agreement does not include responsibility for seasonal time changes (summer and winter adjustments) or for ongoing regulation of the clock’s timekeeping. These are typically carried out by a local person.

5. Advice & Support

On request, we are happy to provide free instruction on the week-to-week care of the clock when we are in the area, helping local caretakers understand the basics of good clock management.

Annual maintenance FAQs

  1. Why does my clock need annual maintenance?

Regular servicing prevents wear, keeps the mechanism running accurately, and avoids expensive repairs later. It’s the simplest way to protect your horological heritage.

  2. What’s included in an annual maintenance visit?

We check the entire mechanism, lubricate moving parts, adjust timekeeping, inspect for wear, and clean as required. We also provide a written service report with recommendations.

  3. How long does a service visit take?

Most visits take 1–2 hours depending on the clock. Complex or multi-dial installations may take longer, but we’ll let you know before we start.

  4. Will my clock stop while you’re working on it?

Sometimes, yes. We’ll reset and restart it before leaving so your clock is back in service.

  5. How much does annual maintenance cost?

Pricing depends on the size, complexity, and location of your clock. We provide clear quotations in advance with no hidden extras.

  6. Do you keep records of each visit?

Yes. Every visit is logged, and we maintain service records so you have a full history of care.

  7. What if a fault is found during maintenance?

We’ll explain the issue clearly and provide repair options. In most cases, we can schedule follow-up work quickly to minimise downtime.

  8. Can you look after heritage and listed clocks?

Absolutely. We are specialists in heritage preservation and follow conservation best practice on all historic clocks.
